This is the only cooking class in Portugal where you get to learn about pastry making inside a real award-winning Portuguese bakery - just 30 mins from Lisbon!

The class starts with an introduction to the history of Pastel de Nata as well as the family-run bakery where this workshop takes place. While we talk, you will also get to try other traditional pastries João's bakery is famous for.

After you've geared up, you'll go inside the kitchen of João's very own "pastelaria". This is where you will learn how to bake the irresistible Portuguese Custard Tarts (aka Pastel de Nata / Egg Tarts) everybody loves!

Unlike other Pastel de Nata classes around Lisbon, we will show you how to make puff pastry like the pros. Afterwards, we will make the custard from scratch and bake it all inside a professional oven. During this class we all work together as a team. Everyone will get to make at least 3 tarts by hand - spread the dough with a specific Pastel de Nata technique, fill in the custard, etc. The end result will be a collaborative effort. A delicious one, of course! ;)

In the end, we'll eat the warm tarts with coffee, tea, Port wine or sour cherry liqueur!

I'm Zara, a Portuguese food writer. I got fed up seeing tourists who come to Portugal pay big bucks for cooking classes that aren't always representative of our food culture. That's why I've teamed up with my friend João, who is a 5th generation baker, to share this experience with you!

João grew up in the hospitality business. At 13 years of age, João decided to embrace the family tradition of baking treats. He helps running his family business consisting of 3 bakeries, which have won 3rd Best Pastel de Nata in Lisbon! He will be the one welcoming you into his bakery and teaching you how to make Pastel de Nata at home!

NOTE: this experience used to run in the centre of Lisbon but, because of Covid19 related changes, we are now happily hosting in the town of Malveira, in Mafra, a well-known area famous for its food related traditions

We really enjoyed this workshop with João. His knowledge, experience and talent shown through the presentation and his stories. He gave us a lot of tips and tricks that we could implement. We are looking forward to trying out the recipe soon.

João was wonderful! We were joined by three others for our experience. We started out by enjoying one of the bakery’s other wonderful treats while he explained the history of Pastel de Nata and the history of his family’s bakery. We were then off to bake!! He was very clear in his explanation of each step, was patient with us and made sure we all got to do different steps. We were able to enjoy our creations warm from the oven. We are spoiled now for ever I think. We throughly enjoyed ourselves and enjoyed meeting João and the others who joined the experience. We highly recommend this experience.

This was a present to my daughter and her friend. They were made to feel so welcome, had the best time, and what's better than eating a freshly baked Pastel de Nata!! I just hope they remember everything they learnt so they can make them for me!

Wonderful Authentic Portuguese experience. With step by step hands on instruction. João was a excellent instructor and communicator. The small class size allowed for a personalized workshop where we able to interact with the instructor and other students. The end result leaving us enjoying the delicious Pasteis de Natas that we made ourselves.

It was awesome. I got really lucky to be the only one person to attend the workshop on this day. In some kind of sense it felt as a private lesson of baking. I saw a real bakery inside, João showed me everything what was there, we had a very nice conversation while cooking. Whole making pastel de nata process was absolutely new to me, so I was impressed and the fact I did it everything with my hands ( and with the help of João 😄).

Wir fanden den Workshop toll! João hat sich sehr viel Mühe gegeben, unglaublich viel erklärt und alle konnten mit anpacken. Eine tolle Erfahrung und sehr empfehlenswert wenn man in Lissbon ist
