Handmade bookbinding using traditional silk kimono fabric is a coveted craft that results in a beautiful original functional work of art. Most book binding shops have turned into automated factories. Tsutomu, a master bookbinder, has run his authentic hand-made bookbinding studio for over 55 years ago. Every step of the process has meaning, making it an artistic and meditational experience. I'm Yoko assistant of my father's studio. He is a great craftsman. I support him and act as an interpreter to visitors in this one of a kind experience for anyone who wants to feel real local culture !

Yoko and Tsutomu were so welcoming and friendly, and they made us feel comfortable from the moment we stepped through the door. They took care to make sure we followed safety measures, and they were so patient and accommodating — especially when it came to helping our children with the trickier procedures. Yoko was great about telling us the history of the process and about the fabrics we chose. The books turned out beautifully, and we all had so much fun!

Our experience with Yoko and Tsutomu was absolutely incredible! They were wonderful hosts and my husband and I had the best time during our private bookmaking experience. The hosts are incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. We learned about the stories behind the kimonos that made the cover of our books to the history of traditional bookmaking. We shared lots of laughs, tea, and amazing memories. I cannot wait to be back in Kyoto and book another experience with this incredible daughter-father duo. Thank you!

Two years ago I made a temple stamp book. I love that book very much and enjoyed making it too. So I came back today to make a book that I'll use as a sketch book. The hosts were as kind as ever. Yoko's English is great and she tells you all about the process and tools and Tsutomu's English is bright and clear for giving instructions. It was great to learn some new skills that weren't part of the other type of workshop. It's an honour to get to be in such a workshop, I love my new book and bet I'll be back again in the future.

It was a really wonderful experience, and I loved that I got to customize my book using vintage fabric and threads. I will treasure it 😊. I also appreciate the local recommendations. I found wonderful places in Arashiyama based on Yoko’s recommendations. Thank you!

This was so much fun!! I've never made a book before, and learning about the steps, the parts that go into reinforcing the spine, and the fact that starch can be used as actual glue, was super interesting! My only regret is that I didn't have time to go back and make a Goshuuincho! For anyone looking for something different, I definitely recommend book-making!

Yoko-San and Tsutomu-Sama were just the kindest individuals. I had a 1-1 lesson where I selected all the materials and built a one of a kind notebook piece by piece. They carefully explained each step, the reasoning, and encouraged every step of the way. As we were talking, I learned some history of the shop, the work they do commercially, and got travel tips and recommendations. The green tea and snacks were a nice finish and overall had just the most amazing experience. Highly recommend.
