"Kingsugi" is an ancient traditional technique of restoring cracks and chips in pottery with "urushi" (Japanese natural lacquer, sap of the Urushi trees). By using lacquer and gold, a broken pottery get a new life again, and became more beautiful.

Our atelier is located in front of Daitokuji temple (大徳寺 in Japanese). Daitokuji temple is well know as the birthplace of tea ceremony culture. Kintsugi developed with tea ceremony culture, so you explerience it in front of the birthplace.

In this experience, you'll hear the story of Urushi trees, and how to get it. You'll surprise to see how precious it is. Then we'll see all the process of Kintsugi restoration. Basically it takes about 8 process to do it and each process take a few days to dry, but in this experience, we prepare each process one, like cooking TV show, in that way, you can see and experience all of it. Highlight of this experience is you can draw urushi on a cracked pottery, the sprinkle on gold powder. You can take it back home as a memory of the experience.

Our process of Kintsugi is authentic way that people use hundreds of years. We use Japanese natural urushi which is getting hard to get, use authentic tools, also you can see many other kintsugi artwork on the venue.

After the experience, we'll serve you Macha green tea with pottery with Kintsugi.
Other things to note
People who experienced an allergic skin reaction are not suited to working wih urushi (Japanese natural laqure), and better not to take this experience.

My husband and I loved this once-in-a-lifetime Kintsugi experience in Kyoto. We were familiar with this art form from articles and research we did about Japan before moving here. We were both very moved by the symbolism behind Kintsugi pieces and were very excited for this experience. We learned a lot about the process and shared amazing conversation and laughs with the hosts. Thank you so much for making our Kyoto trip one to remember.

We had learned about Kintsugi from watching a documentary on the BBC when we lived in England. We already loved the the mindset of giving a broken item new life and not just throwing it away. This visit was our 9 year wedding anniversary trip and pottery is one of the traditional gifts. This experience had an extra special meaning for us as we both have children from previously failed marriages and had built our current family from the pieces that had been left behind. During this experience we came to understand the full depth of Kintsugi, and how much patience and care must go into each and every piece no matter the level of damage we quickly realized this was a spiritual experience. Everyone there was amazingly helpful and polite. Being English speaking wasn’t an issue either. We couldn’t have had a better day, and the depth of this experience was much deeper and personal than we had expected. We left feeling honored to be allowed such an intimate encounter, and will cherish the pottery forever.

What an amazing experience! There is so much to this art form that we didn’t know and learning the entire process was such a beautiful thing! The pieces he works on are stunning! The philosophy and meaning behind Kintsugi is beautiful and warms my heart. My husband and I chose this experience for our 9 year anniversary and it was perfect! Everyone’s English was very very good, they are all very kind and friendly! I’m so excited to get our cups and cherish them forever. A perfect keepsake!

This is a great experience for anyone visiting Kyoto. It's rare to be able to do some real kintsugi so I was really excited about the experience. You not only make your own Kintsugi but also learn about the history and since it's held in a studio you can see other local Japanese students practicing the craft. 100% recommended.

This experience was very informative. We had a little difficulty finding the shop but once we did we were given a warm welcome. The instructor was very kind. We watched a few videos and got to practice on a cup we got to take home. The staff is so helpful and very knowledgeable. A very unique experience

Great opportunity to see a master’s workshop with beautiful projects in various states of kintsugi repair. You’ll have the opportunity to do a small repair and take your piece of pottery home. Very interesting to learn about the urushi tree and history.
