Only Tea Ceremony venue to win The Travelers Choice Award 3 years in a row.

KYOTO MAIKOYA relocated to a old machiya house registered Tangible Cultural Property by the local government. It is a historic townhouse where you can feel the real Japanese culture and enjoy the tea ceremony by gazing at two picturesque Japanese tea gardens.

You will make a green tea (Matcha) in an ancient style Japanese tea ceremony room.

Traditionally the tea ceremony is best enjoyed by wearing yukata or kimono but I'd love travelers to join the activity by wearing casual clothes. You can still experience this superb cultural ritual in Kyoto without changing clothes.

The ceremony itself takes no longer than 40 minutes and you can get done with everything within an hour.

This is a ritual-like activity where ceremonial tea is prepared and presented to promote well-being, mindfulness, and harmony. It is also called the Way of the Tea!
Other things to note
You have an option to do the tea ceremony by sitting on a chair. Please let me know in advance!

*Most sessions are usually private as Japan is still closed for international travel. About 20% of the time there may be another party in your group.

Fantastic tea ceremony! My wife and me followed along in the tea making process. We learned about the history of the tea ceremony, what each movements purpose is, and got to enjoy delicious tea and snacks. It was 30 minutes and we took as many pictures as we wanted. The only request was to not take videos. The area is clean and next to a beautiful garden. Highly recommend during your time in Kyoto.

It was a lovely experience at the machiya. I had a session with Akane and she was very thoughtful and nice. The session was very educational and she answered all the questions I had. Overall a great time. I would definitely spend an afternoon here again. I’ve been in Japan 4 years and it was my first time experiencing something so unique :)

We loved our tea experience! We are a family of 4 (2 adults 2 teenagers) and our kids even found it interesting. Kayo knows SO much about the history and culture and she shared much of it with us. The gardens are very beautiful and the location is easy to find. Parking is close by too in several areas. Just be sure to either bring socks or wear shoes+socks!
