Hi, I’m Aya. I was born in Kyoto in 1967. I started to learn Tea Ceremony when I was 13 years old. Even after I have qualified to teach, I continue to learn from my own teacher.
Tea ceremony is connected with other aspects of Japanese culture such as Ikebana (flower arrangement) and Shodō (calligraphy). It’s not just making or drinking tea.
In Kyoto these days there are many tea ceremony experiences led by people unconnected with the Way of Tea. I provide this class as a licenced teacher from the Omotesenke school of tea, and as someone born, raised and living in Kyoto. My class is for people who want an authentic experience of the tea ceremony. I welcome all your questions about the Way of Tea.
In my class,The capacity is 4 or less.If you have 5 people or more in your group, please contact me directly before you make a booking.

As part of our anniversary celebration, my husband and I were in search of “the path less traveled” and Aya sensei and Manabu sensei far exceeded our expectations. They offered a much appreciated insight into traditional Japanese culture and expertly guided us through the amazing Tea Ceremony experience. We were grateful to learn about the philosophy and principles connected with the ceremony, from the selection of the tea bowl to the meaning behind each elegant hand movement. It is an art form, a delicate dance in a way which all seems effortless until it becomes your turn to prepare and serve the tea. But no worries as Aya sensei and Manabu sensei are present to gently guide you through each step. In addition to our visit, our hosts also provided suggestions for an excellent matcha tea shop, soba and tempura eateries in the area, and a nearby museum and washi shop. We explored ALL that was suggested. We also received an email a day later with a follow-up to some inquiries about a local shop which had the components/materials of the Tea Ceremony as well as other suggestions and options of events, shops, etc. This was much appreciated. This was an amazing experience and we came away having learned even more about the beautiful history of Japan, the Tea Ceremony, our hosts and their ancestors, and their true kindness in sharing their knowledge, mastery, and expertise. We highly recommend this memorable Tea Ceremony experience as an integral part of your time in Kyoto.

Aya was a kind and welcoming host! She was so thoughtful in explaining the tea ceremony and encouraging as we took part as well! We felt that we left with new local friends. We appreciated her advice for local sightseeing and her husband’s patient teaching and beautiful ceremony photos. A wonderful experience!

We had a amazing experience with Aya. She was very friendly and welcoming. She was very detailed in explaining the tea ceremony and connecting us with the Japanese tradition. She was accommodating and quick to respond when we needed to adjust our experience as well as quick to respond when we had some difficulty finding the location. We felt very welcomed and learned so much. She even took the time to make other recommendations for us in the local area not well known to tourists. Highly recommend this experience for anyone wanting to experience a Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony
