Argiroupolis (4km) : Ancient Lappa
Today the village Argyroupoli is built amphitheatrically, almost covering the ancient city and including ancient and Venetian architectural material in many homes throughout the area. The upper and lower village are well preserved and many of the Venetian mansions are still residences. Inside and around the village are excavated parts of the ancient city, Roman remains, Venetian buildings with beautiful doorways and Byzantine churches.

MYRIOKEFALA: 3km from the cottages
Myriokefala is one of the mountain villages of the prefecture of Rethymno located on the northwestern slopes of the Mountain Kryoneritis, 32 km southwest of the city of Rethymno.

Built at an altitude of 570 meters, the Myriokefala is located on the ridge of central Crete and were named after the myria kefalia (=many heads), referring to the hills that rise around the village. Another version speaks of the monks of the monastery of Panagia Antifonitria, who were beheaded by the Turks in 1770 because they were hiding rebels and the yard of the monastery filled with severed heads (myria kefalia).

The Myriokefala village has been inhabited since the 10th century, as mentioned in the will of John Ksenos or Hermit, who founded the monastery. One the oldest monasteries in entire Crete, the monastery of Panagia Antifonitria no longer functions as such, but today is a parish church of Myriokefala. From all buildings and cells of the monastery, at present, only the Katholicon (the main church) is remaining in the center of the courtyard.

Episkopi Beach (7km from the cottage)
The beach Episkopi is located 45km east of Chania and 14km west of Rethymnon, in a fertile valley with lowlands. It takes its name from the nearby village, Episkopi, located 2km southern. Almost no-one Greek knows this place, but everybody knows the family Vardinoyannis, originating from here. This is one of the richest families in Greece.

1. Kournas Lake(10km from the cottage)

The Kournas Lake is the only natural lake on a Mediterranean island. It was created by underground waters coming down from the White Mountains. The landscape around the lake and the lake itself is a protected habitat for many animals and plants. Around the lake have been recorded approximately 400 plant species, among which 7 are endemic to Crete.

2. Georgioupolis and its harbor (10km from the cottage)

The only really active fishing harbor in the municipality of Apokoronas is that of Georgioupolis. You find here the typical colorful fishing boats. The water in the harbor is actually sweet water from the Almyros River that starts just outside Georgioupolis. Many turtles live in this river. Very typical is also the little chapel of ST. Nikolas (the protector of the seamen) that was built in the sea about a century ago. Georgioupolis is also famous for its long sandy beach.

3. The traditional village Vamos(20km from the cottage)

Vamos is a semi mountainous village, 250m above sea level, surrounded by cultivated and wild nature. It is a traditional Cretan village, well-protected from mainstream tourism and very much retaining its character. Here you can find some fine examples of traditional and neoclassical architecture in new and renovated buildings. Today, Vamos is known as a traditional destination and more and more locals have started to restore their own houses here. The local tourist office organizes many activities in the apokoronas, like cooking lessons, cheese making, walking etc.

4. Karydi Monastery (situated 2km east of Vamos)

The Monastery of Agios Georgios at Karydi exists since 1600.The impressive building of the olive factory, which was completed in 1860, consists of 12 arches and is characteristic of the local folk architecture, with Venetian influences. In 1923 the complex was destroyed and the largest part of its property was granted to Veterans of the Asia Minor and Balkan wars. Since 1996 the Monastery is gradually been restored.

5. Ancient city of Aptera (on the high way as you go to Chania city)

The ancient city of Aptera is an important historical place and the ruins you can see nowadays are mainly from the Roman period. The most spectacular constructions are the huge water cisterns and the amphitheatre. Other important monuments are a Dorian Temple, a group of tombs from the 4th century B.C., as well as an almost 4km fortification wall. There is also a Byzantine monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos and a Turkish fortress built in 1866-1869.

6. Vrisses and the Roman Bridge (20km from the cottage)

Vrisses is a typical rural village and an excellent place to visit during the hot summer days of Crete. Vrisses is situated in a fertile green valley with plenty of running water, plane trees and rich vegetation. In fact Vrisses means “fountains” in Greek. The historical landmark of Vrisses is The “Elliniki Kamara”, a bridge upon Vrissanos River that dates from the Greco-Roman era. The bridge is made of stones, fit together side by side without the use of any substance to hold them together. Its height is about 6,5 meters.

7. Gavalochori & the Venetian Wells

Gavalochori is a beautiful traditional village with many places to visit. You can find an arched olive oil mill from 1360, the old school and many old (restored) houses. At the village square is “The Woman’s Co-operative”, selling hand made goods and textiles. About 1km walk from the village square you find igloo-shaped Venetian stone wells, dating back to the 11th century, and a bridge from the Venetian era (1204 – 1669). Several pieces of pottery have been found in these wells that can be seen in the “Folk Museum” of Gavalochori, located close to the square.

8. Stylos and the springs

Stylos has a large square surrounded by huge plane trees. Here there are several springs with crystal clear water. Close to the square you find the old church of Agios Ioannis Theologos (13th century), decorated with frescoes. Excavations in the area have revealed many archeological treasures. In the early 1960s an important Minoan settlement was discovered in “Azoires” hill, which was probably constructed during the early Minoan period. In 1961 an arched Minoan grave belonging to a local ruler was excavated in the western side of the same hill, while more recently an ancient cemetery was discovered.

9. The Byzantine Church of Agios Nikolaos (Kyriakoselia)

The church is a magnificent example of Byzantine architecture and was built at the end of 11th century or the beginning of the 12th century. The church has many beautiful and well preserved frescoes with a strong emphasis on shades of blue. It is a very scenic route to Kyriakoselia! Also the rock church of Agios Mamas above the Byzantine church is worth a visit.

Frangokastello Fortress

Built by the Venetians in 1371, Frangokastello is one of the landmarks of Crete. It is an imposing structure with an exciting and mysterious story: people report to have seen the ghosts of fighters on the beach in some dawns of May.

(daily, 9am-6.30/7.30pm depending on season; €2.50) on the south coast of Réthymno province near Plakiás resort, comprises the older abandoned monastery of Káto Préveli and the main 17th-century monastery of Píso Préveli overlooking the sea. Píso distinguished itself during World War II by helping many of the defeated Australian forces to escape from beaches below, then sheltered stragglers and Cretan fighters for the balance of the conflict.
Preveli beach

On the southern side of the prefecture of Rethymno is a place of great natural beauty, Preveli. This beach is actually where a river flows into the sea, passing through many palm trees and forming a lake close to the sea. There are water sports in this lake to explore the river, while the sandy and unorganized beach of Preveli is a wonderful place to swim.

is located in southern Crete, about 20 minutes' drive. The houses of Plakias hug a large crescent-shaped bay, with most buildings near the small harbour.
If you prefer a panoramic view of the Plakias bay from above, stay at Mirthios, a small village clinging to the cliffs above Plakias with a wonderful view of the harbour. Selia, another small village near Plakias, also offers a panoramic view.
Plakias, beach guide

The beach of Plakias extends east from the village. It is one of the biggest beaches in Crete, offering a sense of space and comfort to suit every taste - the east end is mainly used by naturists. There are showers all along the beach and many parking spaces.

If it's windy during your stay in Plakias and the northern wind whips you with flying sand, head west to Souda beach. It is more sheltered, with small hotels and a few tavernas.

There are other lovely beaches near Plakias at Damnoni, Amoudi and Mikro Amoudi, which is also a naturists' beach. A little further away are Lefkogia and Schinaria, the preferred beach of scuba divers. The beach of Preveli is also excellent.

Fotinari (or Foteinari)
is located between Plakias and the beach of Souda. There are two beautiful quiet beaches, which are formed in the hug of two small coves with lush vegetation. The rocky seabed is ideal for fishing and snorkeling.
Rodakino Beach (KORAKAS)
On the southern side of Rethymno, close to the tourist village of Plakias, is the large and sandy beach of Rodakino. Partly organized with sunbeds and umbrellas and partly secluded, Rodakino beach has soft sand and crystal waters, making it ideal for families with kids and for people looking for some calm moments. Some seaside taverns and apartments line up this beautiful place.

Souda beach

It is actually the last beach of the vast beachfront of Plakias, called Yialia, which starts at Shinaria, several kilometers away. Unlike the true meaning of the name (the Latin word suda means narrow passage), the bay of Souda is quite large.

Agios Pavlos,
is a delightful small coastal village in the Rethymnon prefecture
The long sandy beach with its crystal-clear waters is ideal for swimming and snorkelling and its high sand dunes offer amazing views.
consists mainly of two beaches, which are separated by a small peninsula. At the edge of the peninsula, in the sea, three majestic rocks rise. Triopetra is named after these rocks, since it means “Three Rocks”.

Agia Galini
Agia Galini is one of the most popular seaside resorts of southern Rethymnon, situated next to the exit of the Amarianos River, 61km south of Rethymno city and 68km southwest of Heraklion. This small town is bustling with life during the summer months and provides all the necessary touristic amenities.
Agios Georgios beaches
The valley of St. George is located 3km west of Agia Galini, 69km southeast of Heraklion and 60km south of Rethymno. There are two small bays with wonderful pebbly beaches, which are separated by a rocky shore. The weather here is always mild, making the beaches ideal for swimming all year round.

Glyka Nera (meaning "sweet water")
is one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete, with deep blue water color and nice pebbles. In 2003, the beach was ranked among the best 20 in Europe by London Times. This is located 43km west of Chora Sfakion and 75km south of Chania. This is called like this because of the fresh water that gushes from the pebbles!

Moundros Gorge (Kollita) 3Km FROM THE COTTAGE
Kollita Gorges, i.e. Twin Ravines are located nearby the picturesque village Argyroupolis, about 22km southwest of Rethymnon city. They are named so, as they consist of two parallel canyons that end near Kato Poros settlement. Here we refer to the easternmost gorge of Moundros.
The Gorge of Kourtaliotis 19Km FROM THE COTTAGE
is located 22km south of Rethymno and has a length of 3km. It is one of the most spectacular natural attractions of Rethymnon. It starts from the village Koxare and flows between the mountains Kouroupis (984 m) and Xiro Oros (Dry Mountain - 904m). The huge cliffs of the canyon reach a height of 600 meters and are full of openings and caves, where significant fauna species live.
Petres Gorge is located 13km west of Rethymno and its mouth is situated on the beach of Episkopi. The river of the gorge is fed by the waters of Kollita Gorges and the surrounding area, covering almost half Rethymnon Prefecture. It has water all year round and forms an important wetland of Crete, especially at its mouth near Episkopi.

The gorge of Kotsyfos 19Km FROM THE COTTAGES
starts at Kannevos village and ends at Plakias. The starting point is very narrow with a width of about 10m, which gradually increases and reaches 600m. The total length is 1800m, and the almost vertical sides that reach a height of 600m. Inside the gorge there is a small temple built inside a rocky cavity dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
Agia Fotia Gorge 19Km FROM THE COTTAGES
1.5km east of Spili, next to the main road connecting Spili to Agia Galini, you will meet the chapel of Agia Fotini, also known as Agia Fotia. Next to the road, you will find the springs of Agia Fotia, an old mill and a quite high waterfall (in winter).
Rodakino Gorge 25Km FROM THE COTTAGES
The canyon is formed north of Rodakino village and is inaccessible without the use of canyoning equipment. It starts south of the summit of Kryoneritis Mount and after 5km it merges with the canyon of Sykia, just before reaching the bridge of Rodakino
