A family room (2 adults and up to 3 children) in a spectacular and spacious house in a wonderful place that children just love. Built by us, our friends, some fishermen and lots of volunteers over the last 17 years, the Serai is no ordinary house or villa. Almost every visitor says it has a special and beautiful atmosphere and there are lots of little corners to relax in and soak all that up. Children simply never want to leave. Between the house, forest and beach there's just so much to do.

The Serai sits on a forested hillside between two small fishing communities, 30 min from Essaouira. There are tremendous views up and down the coast and the beach is 8 min walk away.

The main part of the house is arranged around a central courtyard shaded by a vaulted roof of vines. This is the beating heart of the Serai, an interplay of light and sound. Frogs call from the waterfall that splashes into a small, natural plunge pool, while birds fly in and out of their nests amid the rustling vines. Morning sunshine floods into this space through the dining room. The evening light fills it from the western arch, while in the heat of the day, beneath the dappled shade is the perfect place to eat lunch, with a view to the ocean.

The hall, saloon, dining room and kitchen are all open plan. Large windows everywhere flood the house with light. The dining room, and the living room with its spectacular vaulted brick ceiling enclose two sides of this courtyard. The western side of the courtyard features a bar area, more seating beneath the arch and a staircase up to the roof deck.

The Family Room lies on the south side, along with three other bedrooms. Above the principle bed and accessed via a spiral staircase is a mezzanine space for up to three single beds. The en-suite, domed bathroom is plastered in tadelakt with a warm terracotta colour. A glass door looks out over the forested hills to the south.

Beyond the dining room lies the kitchen with its south and east facing breakfast patio. A spiral staircase leads onto the roof.

Lokasi Anda

Essaouira, Marrakesh-Safi, Maroko

The Serai sits between two tiny and very traditional fishing and farming communities, just below a forested line of hills that stretch away to the north and south. It is 2km to the main road and 800m to the beach (4x4 only). Life here has not changed much for hundreds of years. Our own car was the first ever to reach these communities and one of them, Azrou Issa is one of the last in Morocco not to have permanent vehicle access. Transport is still by donkey and camel. The people are wonderfully hospitable and are very likely to invite you into their homes for a cup of tea.

The Coast:
Once on the beach, which is about 3.5kms long, to the south lies a rocky headland full of caves and rock pools at low tide, and blow holes and crashing surf at high tide. And after that is Safi beach, 12kms of deserted sand beneath the forested hills. Essaouira itself is just visible at the end of this beach, 15kms or 3hrs walk from the Serai.
To the north (2.5km) lies the village of Moulay Bouzerktoune, one of the world's premiere windsurfing spots. There's a great little cafe right on the rocks here and a smattering of windsurfing establishments offering rental equipment and lessons. The mosque, very old and well known, watches over a tiny fishing fleet of blue painted feluccas, the traditional fishing boats, pulled up onto the beach.

The Forest:
A mixture of Juniper, Thuya and Argan trees stretch up over the escarpment and then as far as the eye can see. From the top ofthe hill, on a clear day one can see the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Mt Toubkal, the highest in Africa. The forest is interwoven with many donkey trails and one can walk for miles and miles without seeing another human being. You will find their cows, however, free grazing often miles away from their owners. The bird life here is extensive and if you are lucky you might also glimpse wild boar, foxes and jackals.

Farmers' Market:
If your stay includes a Sunday morning then a visit to the Had'raa market (23kms) is a must. It's like stepping back in time. Despite the advent of the motor car 100 years ago most people arrive by horse and cart. Go early to catch the mayhem of the animal auctions but the noisy haggling over the price of everything from bee hives and olive trees to tomatoes and seed continues until early afternoon. There are even mobile blacksmiths' forges for the repair of tools and the setting of horse shoes.

The ancient walled city of Essaouira is a UNESCO world heritage site, which features regularly in such publications as, '100 Places To See Before You Die'. The reason for this becomes obvious the moment you walk through one of the huge gateways into the pedestrian only 'medina'. A labyrinth of tiny streets, some little more than tunnels, opening out onto plazas of all sizes; an abundance of restaurants and cafes, and shops selling the wares of world famous artisans. Explore the battlements and cannons looking out over the Atlantic waves, the former gunpowder magazines now turned into workshops and art galleries, or stroll through the fishing port to see the wooden trawlers being constructed and eat the freshest sardines grilled for you right beside the boats. A huge beach, now lined with 5 star hotels, stretches off to the south, at the end of which one can arrange all kinds of water sports, and trips along the coast on horses, camels, or quadbikes.
