Located half way between historic Cheticamp and beautiful Margaree, you can find our house on electronic Maps, GPS or other navigation technology. If you are travelling north on the Cabot Trail, we are about 10 minutes north of the Margaree Harbour Bridge. If you are travelling south from Cheticamp, the house is the second driveway on the left after you pass the Cap Le Moine sign.

This funky old house, located midway between the historic fishing village of Cheticamp and scenic Margaree Valley, is perfect for the entire tourist season.  In May/June wake up to a panoramic view of the lobster boats catching your supper.  In July/August enjoy a five-ten minute trip to several beaches.  And in September/October, marvel at the changing colors and take in the Celtic Colors International Festival.  3 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, all linens, fully equipped kitchen, laundry room, sun room, wood stove (with wood in the shed), bar-b-q, TV/DVD player, cell service (no satellite or internet).  Five minutes to the nearest grocery store, fifteen minutes to golf, whale watching, museums, antiques & crafts, drug store, liquor store, banks, etc.  With a direct link to the Cape Breton Highland trails system, this is a natural  location for hikers, mountain bikers and ATV enthusiasts.Check in any time after 3PM.  Check out before 11AM. Our house is on a well. This means that multiple showers and loads of laundry ought to be spread out over the day to provide the well time to recover.

When creating a guide for visitors of our Air BnB vacation rentals, I came up with my own list of absolute favorite places to go, things to do, and food to eat. Then I compared my list to some others. We’d love to hear from you about your favorites.

Beaches’ there a plenty, but my favorite are below. There are many more, let me know which ones you like.
• Chimney Corner Beach … a little challenging to find, but a favourite of the locals. It is quite private but my favorite part is the singing sands. There are very few beaches in Atlantic Canada who can boast this feature!
• Ingonish Beach – excellent surf … a ton of fun! Because it is in the National Park, there are showers, change rooms, a canteen and lots of parking.
• Inverness Beach, loved for its sheer size! It is excellent for strolling and hunting for sea glass … it also has a better boardwalk than any in the area.
• Cap Rouge Beach – just inside the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, north of Cheticamp, is a great beach for jumping rock to rock on warm summer evenings. You will be tempted to build an Inukshuk!
• Not a beach, but a very cool swimming spot (at least it was when it was lesser known) is the old gypsum quarry on the back road in Cheticamp. You may have to work a bit to find it, but totally worth the treasure hunt!

There are several golf courses on the Island, but I’ll highlight the ones north and south of us:
• Newly added to lists of the World’s Best Courses and currently getting the most media attention are Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs located in and near the town of Inverness. Their impressive design has garnered much media attention.
• Although the above mentioned are considered the most “high-end”, my favorite continues to be the Highlands Links for it’s sheer beauty (especially in the fall), and its link to the historic Keltic Lodge. In my opinion, this resort rivals Lake Louise in its magnificence!

Ecotourism: Beyond the traditional Bird/Whale Tours, Celtic Music, Salmon Fishing, and Museums that are well advertised, I thought I’d add links to some new and interesting endeavors that provide great opportunities for ecotourism / lifestyle. (Let me know if you want information on the traditional offerings! I’d be pleased to provide it.)
• Live Life Intents – Tube down the Margaree River, Camping Equipment Rentals
• CB West Paddle Boarding – Margaree/Cheticamp area/Tours
• North River Kayak Tours- rentals and tours
• Highland Bow and Arrow- learn the medieval sport, lots of fun, humbling!
• Velo Max Cycling – rentals, repairs, parts
• Ol Miller Trout Farm – U-fish and BnB
• Gampo Abby is a Western Buddhist monastery in the Shambhala tradition located in Red River, Pleasant Bay. Check their web pages for times when visitors are welcomed to tour the gardens and facility, learn about the monastery, visit the Stupa of Enlightenment, or perhaps even to attend a meditation class
• There are amazing trails and waterfalls in the area. Keep an eye out for signs along the Cabot Trail. Some suggestions: The Sky Line Trail is beautiful but very busy … go early. Egypt Falls in Upper Margaree and Uisge Ban Falls, behind Baddeck are not to be missed.

• Mabou Farmers Market on Sunday mornings is my favourite, although there are others across the Island. Located in the Mabou Arena, it is well attended and there is a great variety of vendors.

Artisans: Again, there are too many to count ranging from world famous to folk artists. Here are some of my favorites:
• King Ross Quilts and Fiber Art (Big Intervale, Margaree Valley)
• Cape Breton Clay (Margaree Valley) Bell Fraser’s unique pottery
• Sunset Art Gallery (Cheticamp) – a quirky artist with a great sense of humor!
• Leather Works • Doug Fraser (Inverness) visual artist
• Arts North near Dingwall on the Cabot Trail displays a wide variety of the Island’s artisans. Favorite Coffee/Lunch Spots featuring fair trade coffee and drop dead amazing lunches/baking.
• The Dancing Goat (North East Margaree) – very busy due to excellent reputation!
• The Frog Pong (Cheticamp) – very cool to be part of the Sunset Folk Art Gallery! Best French pastry chef on the Island!
• The Herring Choker (Nyanza – near Baddeck)

Awesome Dining Experiences:
• Glenora Distillery (Between Mabou & Inverness) – My favorite!!! Private get-away, romantic atmosphere, beautiful gardens, white linen, wonderful dining experience with a superb menu. This is where my husband and I go if we want a really great evening away from the kids, phones, business, and business of our lives.
• Big Intervale Fishing Lodge (Big Intervale, Margaree Valley) – the journey to and from is an adventure unto itself. Make a reservation before you go to be sure you have an amazing experience. The location is as special as the food and the hospitality is second to none. Ask them to show you the photo albums of their early days in Big Intervale.
• Nosh At My Table (Margaree Valley) – a private dining experience for parties of 8-12, that you have to book way in advance (but TOTALLY worth it). Amazing host/hostess, ambience, conversation and company.
• Island Sunset (Belle Cote / Margaree Harbour) – Try the prime rib! Amazing sunset over the Margaree Harbour beach.
• Red Shoe Pub (Mabou) – Excels in live music and ambience. Food and service can be variable, but because it is owned by the “Rankin Sisters” most people love to check it out. Check their website and go early when there is live entertainment.

• Big Spruce Brewing- Widely expanding offerings of organic brew in Nyanza.
• Glenora Distillery – Stunning grounds, fascinating tour of the facility, romantic dinners, amazing food & lodging, great entertainment, and fantastic wisky!!!
- Route 19 - a new brewery in Inverness that is gaining fans and traction across the province.

Charles Gains, who has a fishing place in Margaree Forks, describes Nova Scotia as “the last best place” in SaltsScapes Magazine and discusses the magnificence of the place.

In an interview with Local Connections, Halifax Curated: Food and Drink Magazine, Academy Award-winning actor Alan Arkin shares his perspective on the natural beauty and culinary musts in the area of his chosen home in Terre Noire, between Margaree and Cheticamp. He mentions two of my absolute favourite lunch spots: the Dancing Goat in North East Margaree (often so busy that it is a great idea to call your order in before you get there) and the Herring Choker in Nianza (near Baddeck). In another Cape Breton Post article with the famed actor mentions The Frog Pond Café and Myles from Nowhere (Antiques in Margaree Forks) and La Bella Mona Lisa art gallery in St. Joseph du Moine (featuring the fun & quirky work of J Williatte-Battette)… Mr. Arkin has great taste! Very cool choices!
