Drinks & Nightlife

Conveniently located right across the st! Depending on the night it can be a cozy local or a boisterous packed party, but always a good time.

Sightseeing

The Tenement Museum If you're interested in the architecture of lower manhattan I highly recommend their walking/architectural tours - I've worked and lived in the lower east side for over 10 years, and after my first tour I was embarrassed by how little I knew about the amazingly rich history of the neighborhood. I enjoyed the first one so much that I've taken 3 more since then, and I learn something new (actually many new somethings) each time!

Jalan-jalan

The bus is the best transportation for the east side!

There's an express bus (the M15-SBS) that stops literally down the street from my apt and goes all the way up the east side of the island - def take advantage of it! Although it costs the same as the subway, and you'll still need a metrocard unfortunately...but at least it's always great sightseeing, and door to door service!

Lower Manhattan/the Financial District

I have very little interest in the financial cache of these neighborhoods - I just love the history of the area. Lower manhattan was the first settled neighborhood of New Amsterdam (and eventually New York). Definitely check out Stone St (with some pf the oldest surviving town houses in NYC), and at least get a good look at Fraunces Tavern from the outside (where George Washington bid farewell to his troops after the revolutionary war, on his way back home to Mount Vernon) - the inside is a little too over the top at stepping back in time for me
