Drinks & Nightlife

It's a great pub but does a limited but high quality food menu. Steak night on a Wednesday is truly excellent. Hans, the Dutch chef and co-owner, is passionate about his job and it shows. This is real value for money stuff. As mentioned above, this place is primarily a pub and Pip, the (other) co-owner is as passionate about her beer as Hans is about food. She always keeps a good range of high quality craft beers on hand-pump, tap, and in bottles. If your not sure what to drink, just ask; Pip knows (most of) the answers!

Parks & Nature

It's just the other side of the harbour and the best and cheapest way to see it is to head 5 minutes up the road to Aramoana and view Tairaoa Head and Royal Albatross colony from the beach at Aramoana Spit. It's free! Alternatively, it takes about an hour and a half to drive around the harbour via Dunedin out to the Alabatross colony and you book a tour around it and enjoy the presentations, food and drink at the visitor centre. Us locals think it's a bit pricey but all funds go towards the protection of the birds and and it's a popular venue for tourists, so by all means give it a go!

Essentials

If you go back into Port Chalmers (or merely 'Port' as the locals refer to it) and head up over the hill along the main road (George Street) then towards the bottom of the hill on the left hand side is the 4Square supermarket, which has all your essential grocery items and other stuff you are likely to need during your stay.

Shopping

He's got some nice stuff in there. Not cheap, but nice and some of it is rather quirky. The front bedroom mirror and the lam in the lounge at 7's come from here. It's a great place to browse and you'll be tempted because you're bound to see something you like!
