City/town information
The city of Chichester has a lot to offer with the main North, South, East and West streets following the original Roman plan and radiating off from a central medieval market cross. These roads are busy with shops, cafes and restaurants. West Street runs alongside the 12th century Chichester Cathedral well worth a look inside for its architecture, history and art. Off from West Street you will find Tower Street home of the Novium Museum, standing over the remains of the Roman Baths which remain on display https://www.thenovium.org/ The Pallant House Gallery has a renowned collection of 20th Century British art and hosts varied exhibitions throughout the year https://pallant.org.uk/ Smaller but a precious gem, the Oxmarket Gallery sits behind East Street and gives free access to a full calendar of contemporary art https://oxmarket.com/whats-on/john-rank-gallery/ If open space is where you are headed the Bishop’s Palace Gardens behind the Cathedral are beautifully kept and Priory Park off North Street has space to enjoy and a good outside café.

Bosham village lies on the harbour edge 2 miles west of Chichester. It is very picturesque and has a long history, there is evidence of Roman habitation and the 10th Century Church on the Quay was King Harold’s parish church. Bosham is mentioned in the Domesday Book and depicted on the Bayeaux tapestry. Here King Canute was thought to tell the tide to go back, unsuccessfully. And still the tide regularly floods the road and despite warning signs cars are sometimes marooned in water. There is a proper, dry, car park provided in the village and a craft centre, tea rooms and Anchor Bleu public house. You can walk along the sea wall and admire the pretty cottages, the unusual church spire and interesting boats and buildings. There are usually many swans about, numerous gulls and waders when the mud flats are exposed and a lovely salty sea smell.

From Chichester follow Stockbridge Road southwards towards Birdham, A286. It is not far and clearly signed on the righthand side. A long driveway takes you over speed bumps to a free general car park, there is also parking closer to the harbour in front of the Boat House Café. The marina is one of the largest locked marinas in the country with over 1,000 berths. Plenty to see here and the harbour and adjoining countryside give a very enjoyable natural environment to explore.

At the north east edge of Chichester Harbour the inlet at Dell Quay provides a lovely coastal walk and the Crown & Anchor pub with beautiful harbour views. You can walk northwards towards Fishbourne Creek, take the path alongside the sailing club and follow the harbour wall pathway. The view of the Downs and the surrounding area is superb. Numerous sea birds and waders can be seen making good use of the mudflats and reedbeds. If you follow the coastal path south from the pub you can head along the shingle or around the field edge if the tide is in. This way you will reach Chichester Marina and facilities at the Boat House Café.

A beautiful tidal inlet with an RSPB car park and information centre. You can walk around the coastal path to reach the Crab & Lobster pub which has a nice little pub garden. If you fancy a longer walk you can carry on along the coastline to reach Pagham harbour, renowned for its migratory birds. Lovely and peaceful for walkers, bird watchers and anyone who enjoys peace and fresh air.
