Food Scene

Amy Heritage Nyonya Cuisine Restaurant serves Nonya cuisine. It is also known as Peranakan in which it combines Chinese and Malaysian dish. The Peranakan food here is noted as one of the best in the land of Malacca, cooked with fresh ingredients and authentic recipes. Recommended dishes include Nyonya pai tee (crispy deep-fried puff stuffed with vegetables) and chap chai (mixed stir fry vegetables in bean paste) but seriously, everything on the menu is worth your time (and tummy space) too!

Nancy’s Kitchen has long been the number one place to go for good Nyonya food in Jonker Walk and moved to Taman Kota Laksamana. Its atmosphere isn’t at all pretentious - it’s like stepping into a friendly neighbour’s dining room for some delicious food, and dishes come piping hot from the kitchen. Try out their sek bak (braised pork) and sambal sotong petai (sambal squid with bitter beans) with white rice for the ultimate finger-licking experience. A note though; Nancy’s Kitchen is not a Halal eatery so Muslims might want to head to other Nyonya restaurants.

Capitol Satay Celup is one of Malacca's favourite haunts for a savoury meal with loved ones. This pioneer of the satay celup business in Malacca City is located in Lorong Bukit Cina and is easy to find... just look for a queue of hungry diners trailing out onto the street. For those who are unfamiliar of the term, satay celup or 'steamboat satay' is a dish where raw or semi-cooked meat and vegetables on skewers are dipped into a hot pot of thick, spicy peanut sauce.

One of the unique attractions at Malacca is the Menara Taming Sari. It is the only revolving tower in Malaysia. It measures 110 meters in height and its revolving tower offers a wide and far landscape scene overlooking Malacca city. Menara Taming Sari is located nearby Bandar Hilir at Jalan Merdeka. If you happen to be at Dataran Pahlawan Megamall and Mahkota Parade Mall it is just a short 3 minutes’ walk away. The tower’s name is taken after a famous keris, which is a magical weapon belonging to legendary Malay Admiral named Hang Tuah. The design of the structure of the tower takes on the shape of the weapon, while the highest point of the tower resembles its hilt.

The name says it all - reggae music by the river, what more do you need, really? Drinks, of course, and thankfully, drinks served at Reggae on the River will not hurt your wallet, as it is reasonably priced and offers a wide variety of options. The music ranges from classics to modern reggae, and while you might feel as if you’ve just been transported to Jamaica, the soft flow of Malacca River and the animated chatter of its goers certainly reminds you where you are.

Cheng Ho’s Cultural Museum is a gallery housing exhibits about Chinese Ming Dynasty admiral, Cheng Ho (Zheng He). In a warehouse to the north of the Melaka River, the gallery has exhibits on the admiral’s life. Opened in 2006, it is believed that the museum sits on the site of Guan Chang, a warehouse built by Cheng Ho about 600 years ago to temporarily store goods he acquired during his travels. Flanking the front entrance of the museum are a drum and a bell tower.

Everything Else

A replica modern Malaysian house which is unique because everything inside is up-side down. This exhibition is quite a new addition to the normal attractions in Malacca. As in a normal sized house, the house is made up of five areas, the living room, kitchen, master bedroom, children’s room and bath room. Everything is inverted.

This historical fort was built by the Portuguese in 1511 after they defeated the Malacca Sultanate. On 1641, it fell to the Dutch and subsequently in the early 19th century to the British. The fort was to be destroyed in 1806, but was spared by the founder of Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles. The fort is just a 5 minutes’ walk from Christ Church. It is a very peaceful place away from the busy-ness of Malacca city.
