City Park is the largest park in Budapest. The first trees and walkways were established here in 1751. Vajdahunyad Castle, a replica of a Transylvanian castle of that name, was built to show the various architectural styles found in Hungary, and has Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque parts. In the courtyard is the statue of Anonymus, the nameless medieval chronicler to King Béla. The castle is surrounded by an artificial lake that's used for boating in the summer and turns into an impressive ice skating rink in the winter, which is a local favorite. The Budapest Zoo, the Municipal Circus, the Museum of Transport, the legendary Gundel Restaurant and the famous Széchenyi Baths are also located within City Park.

Island in the city

Margaret Island is a 2.5 km (1.6 mi) long island, 500 metres (550 yards) wide, (0.965 km2 (238 acres) in area) in the middle of the Danube in central Budapest, Hungary. The island is mostly covered by landscape parks, and is a popular recreational area. Its medieval ruins are reminders of its importance in the Middle Ages as a religious centre. The island spans the area between the Margaret Bridge (south) and the Árpád Bridge (north). The island houses various sports establishments, like the Palatinus water park (the largest open-air swimming complex in Budapest), the Alfréd Hajós sports pool (where the European LC Championships 1958, 2006 and 2010 took place), a tennis stadium and an athletics centre. The island has a rubber-coated running track measuring 5.35 kilometers (3.33 miles), and is popular among both locals and tourists. Main attractions on the island: • the Centennial Memorial of 1973, by István Kiss, commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the city's unification • a small Japanese Garden with a mildly thermal fish pond • a tiny zoo featuring a wide range of exotic waterfowl among other animals • the "Music Well" (Zenélő kút), a small pavilion, which was originally built for open-air concerts • the "Music Fountain" (Zenélő szökőkút), a fountain near which music is played and light shows are performed in summer (it is close to Margaret bridge). The water springs out according to music, so that the fountain seems to dance at the various classical themes reproduced. • an octagonal Water Tower built in Art Nouveau style in 1911, today functioning as a lookout tower and an exhibition hall The Music Fountain and the Water Tower are protected UNESCO sites. Two hotels provide accommodation: the fin de siècle Grand Hotel Margitsziget, and the modern Thermal Hotel Margitsziget with thermal spa and various medical services. There is also an open-air theatre accommodating an audience of 3500, and several clubs and restaurants. For exploration and pastime, four-person cycle cars or small electric cars can be rented for use on the area of the island.

Taxi

Avoid sitting in random taxis with no company background (freelancers) if you do not want to pay a fortune. Taxis are well priced normally, not expensive, and you find them everywhere in the city. If the light is on, it means it is free, you can stop them by waving your hand. The best and cheapest is, however, to call them on phone, City Taxi (T: +36 1 2 111 111) is one of the most popular companies, they speak English on the phone and you can also pay by card. Other taxi numbers: +36 1 666 6666, +36 1 444 4444.

Entering a restaurant

Men enter first, to protect the women from possible fights inside the place. It is an old habit though.

Etiquette

Hungarians follow similar etiquette to many Europeans. A handshake is a normal greeting, but gentlemen must always wait for a lady to offer her hand first. Eye contact is important, particularly in business dealings – engendering trust. It is still not unusual to see the older generation bowing as a greeting.

Dining out and tipping

When dining out it is usual for a number of dishes to be served. It is normal to try them all, and NEVER start eating before the host; this is considered greedy and ill mannered. Politics and business are not considered good table conversation, and tipping is normal in restaurants, between 10% and 15% of the cost of the meal.

Necessary things to pack

Pack bathers, you never know when you end up in one of the Spas...:) Pack comfortable sneakers for walking, especially up the hills or in the Castle area. In Hungary the power plugs and sockets are of type C and F. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. High heels and LBD is also a great idea to pack for a romantic dinner in the city.
