Beautiful spot for lunch at Le Moulin de Verteuil with a working mill and the best brioche. Plat du jour with view of the river Charente and the chateau Verteuil. Just beautiful. On a hot day, our children enjoyed a dip in the Charente whilst we had lunch, just lovely.

Amazing lunch at Portebleue in Verteuil. Excellent food, service and a lovely spot to dine outside. Wonderful atmosphere inside the restaurant too.

Beautiful location on the Ile-de-re. We stopped for a few hours and experienced the most amazing lunch overlooking the Atlantic sea. Amazing local seafood and stunning surroundings.

Wonderful St Martin En Re. We only stopped briefly for a cool lager but St Martin appears to be an attraction for shoppers, diners and sightseers. Beautiful place. We only spent an hour or so here but will be back!

Coffee and cake
A lovely cafe in the historic village of Tusson. Great for passing the time over a coffee and a slice of something delicious. Grab yourself some lovely fresh flowers whilst you’re there. What’s not to love! It’s also worth picking up a map whilst you’re here, and exploring this medieval commune with its convent and ladies priory.

Wonderful city a short distance from us along the N10. Access to Paris via the TGV if you fancy a trip! Plenty of restaurants to choose from and also a wonderful shopping area. Lots of sightseeing still to do here but can’t wait to revisit.

Amazing chateau with stunning gardens. Many eateries are available serving excellent food in the most stunning surroundings. We had a very brief visit on the way from our second home to Calais. Could easily spend a day or even two here as there is so much to see and do. Walks, cycle rides, horse and bird of prey displays, vineyard to name but a few. Will definitely return with the children and stay nearby in our camper van so that we really can take in this wonderful place and all it has to offer.

Chateau de Chambord
Amazing chateau with stunning gardens. Many eateries are available serving excellent food in the most stunning surroundings. We had a very brief visit on the way from our second home to Calais. Could easily spend a day or even two here as there is so much to see and do. Walks, cycle rides, horse and bird of prey displays, vineyard to name but a few. Will definitely return with the children and stay nearby in our camper van so that we really can take in this wonderful place and all it has to offer.

We had EHU but please be aware that their are no shower facilities here other than an outside communal shower. The campsite was Camping les Maraises. The campsite was full however the owner was kind enough to find us a spot in the staff area as we were struggling to find somewhere to stay. Excellent facilities here. Lots to do for the children and also a great base to explore Ile de re. The island is hugely popular so a good idea to secure somewhere to stay ahead of your visit. Seafood is a must on the island. All so fresh and readily available. We can’t wait to be back!

A vast monthly market is held in Rouillac on the 27th of every month. Definitely worth a mooch around for food, gifts, homewares and even livestock!
