One of the more modern attractions visitors can find in Jonker Street is Mamee Jonker House. Opened in November 2013, it is the brand’s first concept store after 40 years of being a leading household name for children’s snacks. The store has a predominantly modern design of white tiles and glass shelves that is complemented with dark wood furniture and traditional Chinese decor. Mamee Jonker House offers fun activities for visitors with young children or just those who want to relive their childhood memories. Visitors can participate in workshops (held during the weekends) where they can learn to make their very own Lil Monster Noodle Snack using their favourite seasoning and condiments.

Housed in a pre-war corner shophouse, Geographer Cafe is an institution in Malacca, known for its lively ambiance in the middle of the already buzzing Jonker Street. Offering yummy local food and reasonably priced drinks, Geographer is a place both locals and tourists frequent, so head on to the cafe if you’re keen on tip-sharing sessions with fellow travellers. Featuring a very East-meets-West appeal, the tables set on the five-foot walkway and beyond provide the best views of Jonker Street. Geographer Cafe is a favourite place to grab a pint on Friday and Saturday nights (during the Jonker Walk Night Market) and this friendly bar stays open late for drinks. Watch out for live music nights.

A’Famosa is more than just quick photo opportunity for tourists. Built in 1511, the settlement used to sprawl across a whole hillside but now only a lone gate (Porta de Santiago) remains. Originally constructed by Alfonso de Albuquerque (who led the Portuguese invasion on the Malacca Sultanate), the remains of the fort is now a crumbling whitewashed gatehouse that can be found down the hill from St. Paul’s Church. When work was undertaken on the Menara Taming Sari revolving tower in 2006, another part of the A’Famosa was discovered. As a result, the revolving tower was relocated further inland and A’Famosa’s newly-discovered fortress walls were reconstructed.

Dutch Square Malacca is the most picturesque attraction located along Jalan Kota. It is also a colourful trishaw pickup point, easily distinguished by a group of bright, terracotta-red colonial Dutch buildings that were built between 1660 and 1700, as well as louvered windows and chunky doors with wrought iron hinges. A central fountain dominates the area: it is an ornate Victorian marble addition, erected in 1904 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Also within Dutch Square is the Tang Beng Swee Clock Tower. Even though it looks distinctly Dutch, it was actually built by a wealthy Straits Chinese family in 1886 in honour of Tan Beng Swee, a rich Chinese merchant.

The Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum is a collection of three beautifully restored houses arranged to resemble a conventional 19th-century Baba-Nyonya residence. Excellent examples of Chinese-Palladian style, these townhouses, built in 1896, were transformed into a traditional Peranakan museum in later years; connected by a common covered footway, the museum features hand-painted tiles, elaborately carved teakwood outer swing doors and a sturdier internal door which provides extra security. Framed by Greco-Roman columns, two red lanterns, one bearing a household name and the other messages of good luck, hang on either side of the entrance.

Cheng Ho’s Cultural Museum is a gallery housing exhibits about the life of the Chinese Ming Dynasty admiral, Cheng Ho (Zheng He). His most notable contribution to Malacca was his role in bringing the Emperor’s daughter, Princess Hang Li Po, to marry the Sultan of Malacca in the mid 15th century, which eventually led to the creation of the Baba Nyonya culture. Opened in 2006, it is believed that the museum sits on the site of Guan Chang, a warehouse built by Cheng Ho about 600 years ago to temporarily store goods he acquired during his travels. The museum showcases various evidence of cultural exchanges between the local ethnic group and the Chinese.

The oldest functioning mosque in Malaysia, Masjid Kampung Hulu was commissioned by the Dutch East India Company in 1728. As part of their colonisation tactics, the Dutch helped the locals rebuild their places of worship after the Portuguese had destroyed all non-Christian establishments during their occupation. As a result, the mosque is made up of predominantly Javanese architecture with three ascending layers of flared pyramidal roofs. Masjid Kampung Hulu also incorporates Chinese elements such as the pagoda-like stone minarets and ceramic roof tiles.

The Melaka Sultanate Palace is a wooden replica of Sultan Mansur Shah’s 15th-century palace. Set at the base of St. Paul’s Hill it was painstakingly constructed in 1985 using traditional construction techniques and materials, based on accounts in the 16th century, Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals) text. According to the annals, Sultan Mansur Shah’s seven-tiered palace was built entirely without nails and supported with carved, wooden pillars and featured a copper and zinc roof. Although it was the most elaborate royal palace ever constructed in the world in 1459, the structure was destroyed the year after the sultan ascended the throne when it was struck by lightning.

The ruins of St. Paul’s Church are at the summit of St. Paul's Hill. Built on the site of the last Malaccan sultan’s palace, it was constructed by Portuguese fidalgo (nobleman) captain, Duarte Coelho, in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for saving his life during a storm at sea. Roofless and covered in ferns, it was originally called the Nossa Senhora da Annunciada (Our Lady of the Annunciation). Though it has been in ruins for more than 150 years, it is a beautiful, breezy sanctuary (reached after a steep flight of stairs) set near the remains of A’ Famosa fort. St. Paul’s Church offers breathtaking views of Malacca and there are buskers and souvenir stalls at the top of the hill.
