Essentials

A bakery filled with amazing hand made delicacies. I suggest the chicorea pie (not spinach pie) "Hortopita" and all the kinds of bread.

Getting Around

Platia Amerikis called in the past Platia Agamon (Bachelor square) has Patision Avenue that passes from it. There are about 4 trolley busses 14, 11, 3, and 5 and 3 normal busses A8, 54, 608, all of them going in the centre except number 14. So there isn't hardly any wait for a bus towards the centre. Sometimes it is helpful to stop on Victoria station four stops after platia Amerikis (you can take number 14 for that also) and take the subway. Platia Amerikis has a 24 hour trolley bus number 11 that pass from Syntagma, Panepistimou, Patision.

Drinks & Nightlife

A small and very cute bar "Strange Fruit" is one of my favourite bars in my area. It plays good music, what is good music you would ask well music that people dance to it. It is one of the places that always have people with good vibes that love to dance and chat with each other no mater if they know you or not.

The small square (a circle actually) in front of the Agios Giorgiou church is an interesting one, sort of a village within a village with a psistaria-souvlaki shop, a mezedopouleion under new management now with amazing dishes, a beautiful bar, an old-man cafeneon and a Dodoni ice-cream shop. There is also one of my favourite bars in Athens "Allotino Jazz Cafe". You can there before dinner for a beer, wine or probably the best top shelf liquor you will find anywhere. Andreas is a connoisseur of fine wines, beers and liquor and searches far and wide for the best. He also serves snacks and salads with his drinks. Allotino is right next door to "Oi Nostimies tis Mary's" and they both have tables and chairs across the street in the square. There is also a small grocery store in the square that has a great selection of cheese from all over Greece.

Parks & Nature

A big park in the centre of Athens filled with trees and picteresque trails. If you like running amongst the trees this is the place for you. There is a marked route for runners with distance milestones. A challenging route because of the uphill downhill parts but very rewarding. Ideal also for romantic long walks and families.

A small park hidden amongst the tall buildings. Lovely place for a quite moment, reading, having a coffee or let the children play. I sit there sometimes having my coffee and reading a book under the shade of the tall trees. It is only open from 9 am to 5 pm.

A few blocks from my place there is the pedestrian road of Fokionos Negri. It is filled with plants and trees and buzzing with people. There are small bars, cafes and places to eat one next to each other through out the road. Very diverse kind of people from old posh ladies that go out for a coffee with their friends before a game of pinnacle begins to artists, migrants and parents with their children. It is definitely worth a stroll or more.

"Kazakos Drink Bank" is an exquisite wine cellar that you can find bottles of wines from producers all around Greece and the world. Their selection of wines is vast and I do recommend Greek wines that is difficult to find outside the country and they do really well in international wine contests. The people working there are really friendly and willing to help with a knowledge and love of wine. The price range per bottle starts from 5 euros to .... well a lot!!! But which ever wine they have in there it's really worth it. Try greek varieties of grapes you will be positively surprised.

In Agiou Meletiou 60 there is a hidden secret of the city. There you can find a very old patisserie shop that makes its sweets within the shop. Sweets that here in Greece we call "soropiasta" translated as sweets deeped in syrup. Those are sweets coming from the Ottoman era and are made by very thin layers of pastry (so thin that you can even see through them). The owner is a third genaration artisan that if you are lucky you will see him making the pastry "sheets" that are very long and impressive. Most of his clients are dessert shops through out Athens but he has a small bench that he sells them also in really low prices. Try the "Kandaifi" or "Baklava", not recommended if you are on a diet.

"Oi Nostimies tis Mary's" (Mary's delicacies) is a family run restaurant that serves Greek traditional food that is as close as you will find to village or island home-cooking. Run by the lovely Mary, with lots of help from her mother, her husband Christos and her three sons, Nikos, Lefteris and Giorgos, who wait tables and deliver take-out, the clientele are a Kypseli mixture of working-class, poets, artists, pensioners, businessmen, famous actresses and people looking for large portions for prices that are under ten euros whether you come for lunch or dinner. All the food is on display and it all looks so good you probably won't know what to order.

"Bakalogatos" is one of the best restaurant in the neighborhood, some of the most well known chefs of Athens who eat there would agree. They have a large menu, in Greek and in English, and the staff does speak English. Order the mussels, either from Limnos, or Mytilini which come in a delicious broth suitable for dunking their whole wheat bread and paximadia. Save some for their white taramasalata which will make you forget the pink stuff. Order the makaronades with cheese and crispy onions, the pasta with shrimp, the sausage, the sikotaria (liver and stuff in wine sauce), the dolmadakia (stuffed grape leaves), the grilled vegetables are amazing, the Kykladiki salad, or any of the meat dishes. I could go on but start with these and then ask the waiter or owner to suggest something. Oh, and save room for desert, especially the chocolate soufle with home made ice-cream.
