Gerbeaud is a historic pastry shop and café in Budapest situated inside a gleaming white building lavishly decorated with crystal chandeliers, marble-topped tables, and cherrywood paneling. It was Swiss-Hungarian patissier Emil Gerbeaud, who, after taking over the business in 1884, revolutionized the Hungarian confectionery industry with inventive sweets and pastries. Café Gerbeaud has always been known as one of the greatest coffeehouses of Europe. If it's your first time in Budapest I do recommend you stop by for the pastries and a glimpse of the city's now vanished coffeehouse culture. Part of the experience is basking in the historic glow of the space.

Sightseeing

Szechenyi Baths (built in 1913) is the most visited and much praised attraction in Budapest: relaxing, fun, affordable and, at night, romantic. In addition to the marvellous medicinal natural hot spring waters in the 18 pools, there are 10 saunas / steam cabins, several massage therapies, facial treatments, and more. Szechenyi Spa Baths is in the biggest green park of Budapest, in the City Park, close to a bunch of Budapest attractions. The  Neo-baroque palace was specifically built for hosting Szechenyi Baths as Hungary has been the country of baths (and Budapest the City of Baths) for many centuries: starting with the Roman settlers who built the first spa baths, through the 16th century Turkish occupiers who built many of the famous and revived Turkish Baths in Budapest to the 19-20th century natural medical trends that promote aqua therapies and their deeply beneficial effects. The beautiful building of the spa baths is the design of Gyozo Czigler (Győző Czigler) who started to build Szechenyi Furdo in May 1909. Visit and enjoy your time in Budapest in Szechenyi Spa Baths, in a beautiful, richly decorated palace. The perfect place to chill out, to get to know locals, make business deals and fall in love.

Built between 1895 and 1902 to celebrate the thousandth birthday of the Hungarian state, the Fisherman’s Bastion is an impressive neo-Gothic viewing terrace situated on the Buda bank of the Danube, on Castle Hill. Surely Budapest’s most impressive green space, Margaret Island is a 2.5km-long island of quiet parkland on the Danube, linked to Buda and Pest by bridges at either end.  It’s tranquil, secluded and mainly free to explore. Grab a book and chill in the rose garden, or sun yourself by the waterfall in the Japanese garden. There’s also a spectacular musical fountain near Margaret Bridge, which comes alive four times a day, plus a small zoo and a few cafes.

The largest church in Budapest, it can hold up to 8,500 people and is one of Hungary’s most iconic structures. The mummified right hand of the patron saint of the church and first king of Hungary, St Stephen, is kept in a glass case to the left of the main altar. And if that doesn’t turn you on, just check out all that monumental neoclassical architecture. The Basilica’s star feature is the 96-metre-high dome, lined on the inside with ornate religious reliefs. Once you’ve had a little wander, why not take in the impressive views from the cupola?

Opened in 1849, Budapest’s magnificent suspension bridge connects the Buda (West) and Pest (Eastern) sides of the city, arching over the River Danube. Designed by an English engineer and built by a Scot, the bridge is a symbol of national pride and economic advancement. The bridge is historically important, architecturally impressive and only takes around 15 minutes to stroll across, so you can marvel at the views stretching for miles on both sides of the river and get some superb photographs. It also looks fantastic at night when it’s all lit up.

Heroes’ Square is the largest and most symbolic square in Budapest. It is dominated by the Millenary Monument (Ezeréves emlékmű), a 36m-high pillar topped by a golden Archangel Gabriel, holding the Hungarian crown and a cross. At the column's base are Prince Árpád and six other Magyar chieftains who occupied the Carpathian Basin in the late 9th century. The 14 statues in the colonnades behind are of rulers and statesmen – from King Stephen (far left) to Lajos Kossuth (far right). It was designed in 1896 to mark the 1000th anniversary of the Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin.

Wander down the Pest side of the Danube River, and you’ll find one of Budapest’s most poignant and historically relevant memorials. What looks like a collection of old shoes is actually a tribute to the innocent Jewish Hungarians who were slaughtered by the Arrow Cross Party at the height of the Second World War. Known as the Shoes on the Danube Bank, this memorial is a lasting reminder of the dangers of fascism, antisemitism, and xenophobia. Pay your respects to the 20,000 innocent fallen Hungarians during your trip to Budapest. The Shoes on the Danube is located in front of the Hugarian Parliament on the banks of the Danube River.
