In the shadow of the Acropolis and its ancient temples, hillside Plaka is a reminder of how Athens used to be 200 years ago. With it's centuries old houses and cobbled streets it has a village feel, with tiny shops selling jewellery, clothes and local ceramics. Sidewalk cafes and family-run tavernas stay open until late. Nearby, the whitewashed homes of the Anafiotika neighbourhood give the small enclave a Greek-island vibe.
