The Marathon Run Museum is located in the town of Marathon, in the north eastern region of Attica, the place where the marathon race was born. This museum is small but includes more than 3,100 rare exhibits that present the modern history of the Marathon Race from 1896 until this day. The vast collection includes valuable exhibits such as the medal and other personal items owned by the first Olympic Marathon Road Race winner, Spyros Louis, cups and bric-a-brac of Kyriakides, the winner of the International Marathon Race of Boston 1946 and many more. The permanent exhibition of the museum was donated by the Olympic Museum of Lausanne and is consisted of historic photographs and relevant texts. The museum has two buildings; the first includes a noteworthy collection of rare items related to the Olympic Marathon and the second presents elements of the Marathon all over the world like the Marathon equipment or women’s presence in Marathon to name but a few. The Marathon Run Museum is open from Tuesday to Friday, operating between 9am to 3pm and on weekends from 10am to 2pm. The Museum possesses 3,100 exhibits illustrating the history of the Marathon Run from 1896 to date. It is divided in thematic sections according to the Marathons which have taken place in every corner of the world, with references to the Olympic winners, the beginnings of women’s participation in the Marathon and even the equipment of Marathon runners.
