Hidden away on colourful Plateia Avyssinias, in the middle of the flea market, this bohemian mezedhopoleio (restaurant specialising in mezedhes) gets top marks for atmosphere, food and friendly service. It specialises in regional Greek cuisine, from warm fava to eggplants baked with tomato and cheese, and has a great selection of ouzo, raki (Cretan firewater) and tsipouro (a distilled spirit similar to ouzo but usually stronger). There is acoustic live Greek music on weekends. Snag fantastic Acropolis views upstairs.

The meat and fish market fills the historic building on the eastern side, and the fruit and vegetable market is across the road. This quirky old taverna is one of the dining gems of Athens. There’s no signage, only two doors leading to a rustic cellar where there’s no menu, just a few dishes that haven’t changed in years. The house speciality is revythia (chickpeas), usually followed by grilled fish and washed down with wine from one of the giant barrels lining the wall. The often erratic service is part of the appeal.

Walk this famous road below the Acropolis hill - This magnificent pedestrian street is the way St. Paul walked from the Agora to the Areos Pagos... In 51 AD, St. Paul the Apostle visited Athens, the cradle of Philosophy, Science and the Arts, and the proud owner of Parthenon. He arrived by boat at Faliro, the then harbor of the greater Athens area, and he walked to the city where he found an altar bearing the inscription “to the unknown God”. As he waited for his students Silas and Timothy, to arrive from the Greek province of Macedonia, he walked across the ancient Agora and the Acropolis, visited the Agora and discussed with philosophers. His destination was Areos Pagos where he preached the Unknown God to the Athenians and instituted Christianity in Athens.

In 1869, the Greek Parliament allocated 80,000 square metres (860,000 sq ft) of public land between the Palace Gardens and the ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus, and also passed a law on 30 November 1869, "for the building works of the Olympic Games", as the Zappeion was the first building to be erected specifically for the revival of the Olympic Games in the modern world.

The Pnyx (/nɪks, pəˈnɪks/; Ancient Greek: Πνύξ; Modern Greek: Πνύκα, Pnyka) is a hill in central Athens, the capital of Greece. Beginning as early as 507 BC, the Athenians gathered on the Pnyx to host their popular assemblies, thus making the hill one of the earliest and most important sites in the creation of democracy. At this site all the great political struggles of Athens of the "Golden Age" were fought out. Pericles, Aristides and Alcibiades spoke here, within sight of the Parthenon, temple of Athena. Here Demosthenes delivered his vilifications of Philip of Macedon, the famous Philippics.

The Church of Panagia Kapnikarea or just Kapnikarea is a Greek Orthodox church and one of the oldest churches in Athens. It is estimated that the church was built some time in the 11th century, perhaps around 1050. In pre-classical times (before the 5th century BC), the Areopagus was the council of elders of the city, similar to the Roman Senate. The Areopagus (/ˌæriˈɒpəɡəs/) is a prominent rock outcropping located northwest of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Its English name is the composite form of the Greek name Areios Pagos, translated "Ares Rock" (Ancient Greek: Ἄρειος Πάγος). In classical times, it functioned as the court for trying deliberate homicide. Ares was supposed to have been tried here by the gods for the murder of Poseidon's son. The Areopagus, like most city-state institutions, continued to function in Roman times, and it was from this location, drawing from the potential significance of the Athenian altar to the Unknown God, that the Apostle Paul is said to have delivered the famous speech, "Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands." (Acts 17:24)

Roman Agora & Tower of the Winds The entrance to the Roman Agora is through the well-preserved Gate of Athena Archegetis , flanked by four Doric columns. It was financed by Julius Caesar and erected sometime during the 1st century AD. The well-preserved, extraordinary Tower of the Winds was built in the 1st century BC by a Syrian astronomer named Andronicus. The octagonal monument of Pentelic marble is an ingenious construction that functioned as a sundial, weather vane, water clock and compass. Each side of the tower represents a point of the compass, with a relief of a floating figure representing the wind associated with that particular point. Beneath each of the reliefs are faint sundial markings. The weather vane, which disappeared long ago, was a bronze Triton that revolved on top of the tower. The Turks allowed dervishes to use the tower.

Keramikos (Greek: Κεραμεικός), formerly known by its Latinized form Ceramicus, is an area of Athens, Greece, located to the northwest of the Acropolis, which includes an extensive area both within and outside the ancient city walls, on both sides of the Dipylon (Δίπυλον) Gate and by the banks of the Eridanos River. Founded by Aristotle in 335 BC., the lyceum was known as a Peripatetic School (from the Greek word peripatos, which means stroll) as it is believed that Aristotle liked to stroll through the school’s tree filled groves discussing philosophy and the principles of mathematics and rhetoric with his students.
