“The most iconic ancient Greek monument, the birthplace of democracy and the foundation of the west as we know it, this is an absolute must see. The Acropolis itself is a fortified hill and a generic term, all ancient Greek cities had Acropolises. But the Athenian one is the most famous and important. It is topped off by the Parthenon, an ancient temple considered to have the perfect proportions. Its first name until 1927 was "Royal Garden". The park is located next to the Greek Parliament and extends to the south where the Zappeion Palace is located opposite the Panathenaic Stadium where the first Modern Olympic Games were held in 1896. The garden still houses ancient ruins, columns, mosaics, etc. In the southeast are the busts of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the great Philhellene Einardos while at its southern end is the bust of the national poet Dionysios Solomos and Aristotle Valaoritis.”
