Rebuilt and renamed for Fayetteville’s former Chief of PoliceTunney Hunsaker, who fought in the ring against Muhammad Ali when he was still Cassius Clay. They became lifelong friends.

This bridge used to be the only point of connection across the vast New River Gorge. The drive down to the bridge is sometimes hair-raising sharp turns, but it is worth it. Once you drive across the low Fayette Station Bridge, turn into the parking area just beyond for some great views of whitewater rafters and kayakers battling the rapids. There is also a nice little beach area for kids to dip into (with appropriate supervision, of course). The rocks alongside the river are nice for picnics as well.

This is at the bottom of the gorge. Late afternoon or early evening gather a bit of food and drink and a folding chair and park in the small lot just before you drive across the bridge. Take your goodies & chair and set up on the walkway to enjoy the view of the rapids & boats running the river!!

Great drive down to the New River on Fayette Station rd. You go under the New River bridge, along some great climbing at Bridge Butress where you can see climbers from the rd. You cross the historic Fayette Station bridge right above Fayette Station rapids (Class II-IV) Great spot to see rafters or get in the river for a swim.
